Meet the Masters Training

bonheur bookBecome a Meet the Masters Volunteer - a unique opportunity to give your time and talent to our Madison Scholars. On Monday, December 1, at 1pm in Room 8, get trained to help our students carry out an art project in the classroom. Featured artist for October: Rosa Bohner Must be VIPS (Volunteers In PublicSchools)
Parents who volunteered last year found it helpful to attend the classroom assembly listed below to gain a better knowledge of the artist prior to demonstrating the hands on art project to their classrooms. However, attendance to the assembly is not required but provided for those who would like to attend.  During the training at 1PM, you will be led by an instructor and shown step-by-step on how to create the art project for this artist.

"Hats off" to our Madison Artists

Teachers and parent volunteers led students in their Meet the Master lesson on Mary Cassatt. The finish artwork adorns the hallways and classrooms of Madison.

Your student artists will enjoy learning about the dreamlike surreal style of Joan Miro.  Using abstract shapes, the children challenge their imagination to change reality into a special world where anything is possible.

Rosa Bonheur

Rosa Bonheur was an unusually brave and artistically gifted artist for her time.  Living in France, she loved animals and realistically captured the very essence of many species of animals.  The children will create their own realistic animals emphasizing texture, symmetry, and color.

Your student artists will explore the unique art of painter, Georgia O’Keeffe, an American woman artist.  Her modern desert and botanical paintings will inspire your young artists as they paint in her style.  They will apply lessons on color values and shading to enhance their artwork.

Mexican (1907-1954)

Frida Kahlo enjoyed a short but successful career as the wife of famous muralist Diego Rivera.  Her poor health and suffering is evident in her soulful self-portraits.  The children will emulate this master by creating oil pastel art, featuring colorful parrots and fruit, imitate her national pride and vibrant colors.

Dutch (1872-1944)

Your students will discover the abstract art of Dutch painter, Piet Mondrian.  His balanced compositions expose the children to a new style of art in which lines and geometric shapes are used to express mood and feeling.  In their classrooms, the children create Mondrian-type balanced compositions.

Meet the Master Program

One of our aims is to provide our students with a balanced program consisting of the core curriculum and the the arts. The arts portion of our program provides our students with lessons in which they learn about the artist they are studying for the month. They also participate in an art activity in which they get to explore their creativity and talent in the area of art.

Because an arts education develops a diverse range of cognitive abilities, it helps teachers promote achievement across disciplines, as well as in an arts discipline, fostering the development of spatial, mathematical, logical and physical abilities. The arts also involve students in the process of their learning, demanding reflection and active participation. The arts enable students to collaborate toward a common purpose and they connect cultures and curricular disciplines. And yes, the arts are a pleasure, but they also foster creative thinking in the complex world in which we live.

Arts develop the 4 C's:

A quality arts education can help students develop the four C's:

  • Cognition:  The arts expand our knowledge and contribute to intellectual comprehension.  Studies have shown that the arts teach children how to think critically, solve problems, analyze and synthesize information, evaluate and make decisions.

  • Culture:  The arts help us understand people and the traditions and symbols that have meaning for them.  The arts are international and transcend the limits of different languages, and help to bridge the gaps in a diverse and complicated world.

  • Communication:  the arts help us send and receive messages in a variety of media that are their own form of literacy.  The arts use sights, sounds, and movement to convey meaning beyond the power of words.  Arts education develops the ability to interpret and understand complex symbols in the same manner as language and mathematics.

  • Creativity:  the arts teach the skills associated with imagination, invention and innovation-skills.  Creativity learned through the arts is linked to the processes of scientific discovery, planning and negotiation.
